In 1971 I bought my Selmer Mark VI Saxophone. I paid $600.00 for it. Now it's worth about $4,000.00! I have played the same horn ever since. All the wear and tear and patina you see in my photo are self imposed. On the horn, that is. It was my pleasure. The serial number is 191xxx. For more on Selmer serial numbers, click here. The mouthpiece that I have played for twenty years is a metal Otto Link "Super Tone Master" #8. I bought it from Tom Alexander when we were both scuffling tenor players in Santa Rosa, Ca. I use Alexander Superial reeds exclusively. I use them because I think they are the best reeds made, not because of my personal relationship with Tom. For prices and more on Superial reeds, click here. I prefer the regular Superials #3, or the DC cut, #3. For my ligature, I am using an Olegature . It seems to improve the overall performance. This combination makes this horn the sweetest sounding horn! It goes right to the core of each note. I love this horn!! I have played many different horns in my time, but nothing,... nothing plays like a Selmer Mark VI. My alto is a Yamaha YAS-61. I bought it in 1976 for my circus gig. The mouthpiece is a Meyer 7M. I am using a Rovner Eddie Daniels ligature. Again, my reeds of choice are Alexander Superials, #3. Last but not least, I have recently purchased a Yamaha YSS-875 Custom Soprano. I use a Bari metal #7 with an Olegature. Of course, the reeds are Alexander Superials #3. This is a very responsive and sweet sounding horn. My flute is an old Gemeinhardt 2S, solid silver body and foot. The head joint is a Yamaha hand made CY solid silver. I am also using a headstopper and crown assembly made by Robert Bigio. This combination makes this flute a very easy to play and responsive instrument. Ever wonder what other players set ups are? Check here for a list of some well known players and their set ups, thanks go to Arthur Bouton, Lamont School of Music. Want to see Adolphe Sax's original instruments? Click here.
