What I like to do for fun sometimes is to play along with a recording that I like. It doesn't matter whether you sound like the person or not, or if you can cop any of their licks. What you're doing is absorbing that person into your musical "hard drive" if you will. Unconsciously you are soaking that persons sound and concepts into your brain. Try it, if nothing else, it's a kick in the pants (fun). This sort of thing has been done by the greats for a long time. You get a little from this guy, a little from that guy, and pretty soon you start to develop your own sound and then people will be copping your sound! See how that works?
